Ever since Alex requested a Jack Skellington (from The Nightmare Before Christmas) lunch for this hop, I have had that song running on a continuous loop in my head! :-)
Alex and I struggled with how to make Jack. We wanted to make him out of something Alex would want for lunch and we wanted to use things that we already had on hand, as much as possible. I don't have any food markers, so Jack's features were really stumping us! Then I remembered that I had packaged up and frozen some leftover mini party pumpernickel bread slices! We were saved!
Here's Alex's skeleton themed lunch...
A Sunbutter and jelly sandwich on oatmeal bread (features out of party pumpernickel), Xochitl's black and orange tortilla chips with salsa in the minidipper (jack-o-lantern features made with dry erase marker), blood red grapes (skull ring from the dollar store) and vanilla Oikos Greek yogurt skulls in Halloween Oreo dirt.
Some details about Jack...
His head was cut out using one of our drinking glasses. And his features were cut out using the new CuteZcute cutters found at All Things for Sale.
His eyes are from the bear...
And his nose and mouth came from the frog...
(ever wondered how close city houses are... yeah, they're that close)
Lastly... the yogurt skulls...
The skulls were made by freezing yogurt in a skull ice mold that I found at the dollar store. This time, instead of making a pile of skulls, I froze a layer of yogurt in the bottom of the compartment, then added a couple of skulls to the top. This way Alex had plenty of yogurt, and the skulls were still able to lie flat. Then I just crushed some Halloween Oreos to make some "dirt" topping!
My son usually makes his own lunch everyday for school... but today on the way to school, he told me how much he loves hop days, because we get to plan fun lunches together! :-)
