doctor who blog hop!

I am soooo excited about this blog hop!  I had heard of Doctor Who before, but had never watched it.  Then I joined this group of bento blogging gals and learned that many of them were huge fans of the show.  I looked it up on Netflix and there it was!  It looked like something Alex would enjoy as well... so one day, when we had the house to ourselves, we watched the first episode with the 9th doctor.  We were hooked!!  We couldn't stop watching!  We're still not caught up yet (still on the episodes with the 10th doctor), but we're well on our way.

A couple of months, ago this group decided to do a blog hop to celebrate the first show of the new season of Doctor Who.  I was on the fence.... I wanted to do it, but I struggle with theme lunches.  I was still without a clear idea until Saturday.  Then inspiration struck while at lunch at Qdoba with the boy!  He wanted a lunch based on The Empty Child episode and I now knew what I was going to do!!

So, here's Alex's lunch...
A burrito bowl "empty child", Tardis blueberries and giant green grape nanogenes, the Doctor's companion Rose, and since "you should always take a banana to a party"... an "Are You My Mummy?" banana. (And behind it all... a beautiful Doctor Who cloth napkin from the fabulous Molly's Lunch Box)

I'll go over it all, section by section so I can explain things a little better.

Section 1...
My "Empty Child"... I was pretty pleased with how this turned out!  I knew the empty child would have to part of this lunch, I just wasn't sure what I was going to make it out of.  While having a burrito bowl at Qdoba with Alex on Saturday, I started thinking that I might be able to use these ingredients to make my Jamie. I started planning... and everything just came together! See... the beauty of this creation is that I didn't make any of it specifically for this lunch!  The rice was from a dinner this week.  I scooped out some extra rice, added lime and cilantro and put it away in the fridge.  The next night I made tacos for dinner.  The leftover taco meat is the base of the gas mask... it's under the black black beans.  The next layer is the black beans.  Those are also leftover from taco night (my kids prefer them to refried beans, so that's what we have with tacos).  The eyes and mouth part are just rings of sweet onion.  What I didn't include in the photo was the little container of ranch and cheese Alex took to add to his burrito bowl at lunch.

He really liked this lunch!  He said that it really tasted good when it was all mixed together.

Section 2...
A little bit of a stretch to make this fit the Doctor Who theme... but here's what we came up with... the blueberries are blue like Tardis and the green grapes were like big giant nanogenes from that episode.

Section 3+....
The Doctor's companion, Rose.  We knew we wanted to include Rose in this lunch, but how?  That's where pinterest came in.  We searched pinterest for roses made out of food and found these beauties!  They were perfect!!!  Especially since the boy LOVES bacon!  After we cleaned up our taco dinner, Alex and I set to work rolling bacon roses!!  Ours didn't turn out quite so perfect, but they turned out good enough to go in his lunch!  I thought there should only be one rose in his lunch, since there is just one Rose, but he loves bacon so much, he insisted on two.

And finally... the "Are You My Mummy?" banana.  Alex takes a banana in his lunch every.stinkin'.day... so a banana was a must.  I decided to add the words of Jamie to it.  I just scratched them in with a toothpick.  They're pretty faint here, but Alex said that by lunch they were really dark!  One of his friends from school is a big Doctor Who fan too.  He loved the banana so much, he asked if he could take the peel home.  I'm sure his mom was thrilled to find that!
